"The Call of The Hummingbird" by Christine Lehmann

"The Call Of The Hummingbird" is a wonderfully absorbing novel that reflects recent news headlines but is, at its heart, very much a love story about two star-crossed lovers.

Jasmin is a protagonist with whom young readers can identify, a teenage girl struggling to come to terms with the intense emotions of her first true love, battling with her parents whom she is sure do not understand her, navigating the minefield of teenage female friendships and confronting for the first time the harsh reality of the world outside her sheltered family life (poverty, violence, injustice, death). And she is also very much a fearless adventurer, a girl on a mission with a mystery to solve, and her journey takes her (and the reader) from the alleyways of Bogota to the rugged wilderness of the Andes.

A country steeped in magic. A thrilling love story. A breathtaking political thriller. A novel satisfying a girl's longing for romance but at the same time creating a world full of danger, myths and adventure.

A year in Columbia. As yet, Jasmin has no idea what is in store for her "that she will discover what despair is, that she will be charmed by the magic of the country, come face to face with violence, taste the smell of freedom, come up against the limits of what is possible. More than anything else, she will meet Damian". Damian, the good-looking Indio hiding a dark secret. Jasmin finds answers deep in the Columbian jungle and in the misty mountains of the Andes. And she is already hopelessly caught up in her love for Damian.
